Bicycles For Humanity Collection On Hold until 2012

If you have a bike for us - just hold on to it until the NewYear!
Our collection partners get very busy this time of year so if you can hold on for another few months we’d really appreciate it.
If you have a bike to give us you can drop it at one of the many locations (see the FAQ section) that act as pick-up points for our three Australian chapters (Melbourne, Sydney and Perth). We’ll be by within a few weeks to pick it up, prep it and pack it for its journey to a new life. Here are a few points to keep in mind and commonly asked questions answered.
What kind of Bikes can you take?
We can put almost any bike to good use - however we can only send mountain bikes and sturdy hybrids to Africa and other destinations. Bikes that aren’t suitable for shipping are either distributed to groups such as refugee families in Australia or passed on to help fund shipping and other costs.
What condition does the bikes need to be in?
The bike needs to be in working or easily fixable condition. Generally rust is the biggest problem. Small issues like brake and gear cables or flat tyres are no problem.
Do you take bike parts?
Yes - bike parts are extremely helpful.
Can you pick up my bike?
Unfortunately as a completely volunteer run organisation we don’t have the resources to pick up individual bikes. If you have more than 15 then let us know and we may be able to drop by when doing the Bicycle Super Store run.

We Say Goodbye to the Container
June 5, 2009

The Full Container
Yesterday was a momenteous day - a truck from Gibson Frieght arrived and after a small drama involving a badly parked car made it into the collection site.

Closing the Doors for the last time while the ABC cover it.
We packed 3 computers and some innertubes from Human Powered and sealed it up. It was loaded and off to the port and we cracked a bottle of champagne.

The container loaded onto the truck - the easy part.
While this is the end of this stage, it is really only the beginning of the story which will now unfold in 5 weeks time when the container arrives at Walvis Bay in Namibia and is then implemented as Bicycles Empowerment Centre by BEN Namibia.

The ends and beginnings of things

The truck makes its way out to the street - the hard part. That's Matt holding a power line out of the way.
There are many people to thank - All our sponsors, everyone who dropped their bikes off, all the astounding volunteers, all our fund raisers. The story continues from here and now gets really interesting.
We’re already gearing up for next year’s shipment - with Knog and Bicycle Super Store on board the next one will be easier and no doubt even more fun.
This container ships on the 9th of June - stay tuned for news of its arrival and implementation in Namibia.

The Bicycles For Humanity Present the KNOG Bicycle Roundup 2009

The 40ft Shipping Container awaits the Bike Round Up.
Our first bike collection was a huge success with the conatiner now packed with over 400 bikes and hundreds of paniers and bags from Knog. Were now moving fast towards next years shipment - if you have a bike you’d like to donate please sign up to our newsletter and we’ll keep you posted on everything that’s going on.
Thank you to everyone who donated a bike, ran, swam, rode, donated and voluteered to make this project such a success and such a joy to be a part of. From being focused of the immediate practical needs of collecting and packing bikes 15 across, three layers high into a 40 foot shipping container we now can’t wait to see it implemented in Namibia and begin to tell the stories of lives changed and horizons broadened. It’ll all be posted here so visit again soon.
